Midview Football looks to rebound at Elyria in Week 9

Who: Midview High School (4-4, 1-4 SWC) and Elyria High School (0-8, 0-5 SWC)

What: Week 9 OHSAA Southwestern Conference Varsity Football Game

Where: Elyria High School's Ely Stadium (1915 Middle Ave., Elyria, OH 44035)

When: Kickoff is Friday (October 18) at 7 p.m.

Tickets: All Tickets are General Admission and $8. Everyone Kindergarten age to 59 years of age must have a ticket in order to enter. Senior Citizens (60+) are also admitted free regardless of where they live. In addition, Midview Local School and Elyria City School employee IDs and SWC passes will be accepted.

Haltime Performance: The Midview High School Marching Blue will perform first followed by the Elyria High School marching band.

Last Meeting: The Middies earned a 35-28 Homecoming victory over the Pioneers in Week 9 of the 2023 campaign. Ethan Elbert completed 11-of-20 passes for 206 yards and 3 TDs, while running 14 times for 83 yards and another TD. Hunter Anderson added 14 carries for 53 yards and a TD, while Dane West caught 5 passes for 126 yards and 2 TDss. Wyatt Lehman paced the defense with 15 total tackles, while Brayden Homoki added 12 stops, including 2 tackles for loss.

2023 Records: Midview finished 4-7 overall and 2-5 in the Southwestern Conference, while Elyria went 1-10 overall and 1-6 in the SWC. The Middies lost 49-7 at Highland High School in the first round of the OHSAA Division II Playoffs. The Pioneers dropped their OHSAA Division I opener 42-0 to St. Edward High School.

Midview's Last Game: The Middies suffered a 49-10 loss to visiting Avon High School. Senior Cody Martin completed 6-of-9 passes for 128 yards and a TD. Junior Marcus McMahon had a team-best 9 yards on the ground, while senior Dior Jones had 4 receptions for 117 yards, including a 50-yard TD. junior Michael Passerrello Jr. led the defense with 11 total stops. Elyria's Last Game: The Pioneers fell on the road 44-10 to Amherst Steele High School. Levi Springer scored Elyria's lone TD, a 56-yard pass from Antonio Pride in the fourth quarter.

Midview Head Coach: Head Coach Jack Armstrong is now 8-9 in his second season leading the Middies. Armstrong, a 2012 graduate of Midview High School, is a Special Education Coordinator at his alma mater and has served as a varsity assistant coach with the Middies for six of the previous seven seasons before taking over. He is the just the eighth coach in program history, which dates back to the consolidation of Belden, Eaton and Grafton high schools in 1955.

Elyria Head Coach: Veteran Head Coach Matt Wilson is 0-8 in his first year leading the Pioneers' football program.

Midview Stat Leaders: Junior quarterback Shay Williams has completed 51-of-96 (53.1%) passes and thrown for 675 yards with 4 TDs and 4 INTs. He also has 86 carries for 347 yards and 2 TDs. Junior Marcus McMahon has 59 carries for 249 yards and 4 TDs, and junior Michael Passerrello Jr. has 64 carries for 273 yards and 2 TDs. Senior Dior Jones leads the receving corps with 22 catches for 427 yards and 2 TDs, while McMahon has added 11 catches for 104 yards and 1 TD. Jones (2) and Passerrello Jr. (1) have combined for 3 special teams TDs this season. Junior Brayden Homoki leads the team with 123 total tackles, while junior Michael Passerrello Jr. has added 73 total tackles on the year. Midview Returning Lettermen: Midview returned 17 letterwinners from a year ago, including All-SWC first team junior running back/defensive back Michael Passerrello Jr.

SWC Non-Conference Success: The 8 SWC teams combined to go 17-7 over the first three weeks against non-league opponents. [Standings]

Playoffs Outlook: Midview currently sits 11th in Division III Region 10, while Elyria is tied for 17th in Division I Region 1 through week 6 of the season. The top 16 of each region once again make the playoffs in 2024. Drew Pasteur's Fantastic 50 projects that the Middies have likely locked up a playoff berth but need to win their final two games to secure a home match-up in Week 11.
