Midview Football defeats Amherst 14-7 in OT to secure playoff berth

A one-yard touchdown run by junior Sawyer McMillin, a huge sack by junior Blake Butts and an interception by sophomore De'Mere Gray proved to be the difference in Midview Football's 14-7 Southwestern Conference overtime victoy at Amherst Steele High School Friday (October 24) night.

Both teams entered with identical 4-5 records and needed a win and some outside help to secure an OHSAA playoff opportunity. The Middies took care of business on the field and appear to have gotten the help they needed to earn the No. 12 and final seed in the upcoming OHSAA Division III Region 10 tournament. Midview (5-5, 2-5 SWC) is currently projected to visit No. 5 Rocky River High School (8-2) on Friday (October 31) at 7 p.m. The tournament field will be finalized later this weekend.

Senior Marcus McMahon broke a scoreless tie with a 22-yard touchdown run, his 23rd of the season. Senior Kaden Vonya's extra point made it 7-0 Middies with 2:45 left in the third quarter. The Comets took advantage of a Midview fumble to tie the game with a six-yard quarterback run at the 4:43 mark of the final quarter. Both teams had a chance to add field goals at the end of a half. Midview had an attempt go wide right just before halftime, while Amherst had a chance to win at the end of regulation but that kick was wide left.
