Midview Football runs past North Olmsted 27-20
Midview Varsity Football survived a rollar coaster ride of a game to defeat host North Olmsted High School 27-20 Friday (August 29) evening.
The Middies went three-and-out on their first possession, before the Eagles took the early 7-0 lead on a five-yard TD pass during their opening possession. Midview tied the game less than a minute later when senior Shay Williams tossed a short screen pass to senior Marcus McMahon, who then raced 87 yards for the score. The Middies added an 11-yard Williams TD run near the end of the first quarter and led 14-7 after one frame.
Midview extended its lead to 20-7 at the half after a 40-yard McMahon TD run and the extra point attempt was blocked. North Olmsted quickly gained the momentum after halftime with an 85-yard TD pass and then an interception led to a four-yard TD run. Midview's special teams, however, kept it a 20-20 game by blocking the second point after attempt with 6:01 to play in the third quarter.
Both teams traded possessions down the stretch until the Middies finally came through with the game-winning drive late in the game. A key play was a fourth and one redzone conversion by Williams. McMahon took the handoff on the next play and bullied his way over the goal line from nine yards out. Senior Kaiden Vonya made the extra point to give Midview a 27-20 lead with 1:34 to play. The Middie defense held strong the rest of the way, and junior Brennan Newton sealed the victory with a fourth down interception. That allowed the Middies to kneel out the clock.
Midview (2-0) welcomes Elyria Catholic (0-2) to Ross Field at Adelsberg Stadium for its home opener on Friday (September 5) at 7 p.m.
