Midview Football Eliminated by Rocky River 20-15 in Regional Opener

No. 12 Midview Varsity Football went toe-to-toe with No. 5 and host Rocky River High School in an OHSAA Division III Regional Opener Friday (October 31) night. The Pirates advanced with 20-15 victory, ending the Middies' season at 5-6.

The run-heavy Middies and the pass-focused Pirates were a battle of offensive opposites. However, Friday turned out to be a defensive battle, as both teams came up with huge stops to keep the game low scoring.

Rocky River led 7-0 after the first quarter, before senior Marcus McMahon got Midview on the board with a 10-yard TD run, his 22nd on the ground (24th overall) this season. An extra-point by senior Kaiden Vonya tied the game at 7 with 3:35 to play in the half. The Pirates took back the lead 14-7 with a TD run midway through the third frame. The Middies scored on a 7-yard TD pass from senior Shay Williams to senior Zachary Wallace and then took a 15-14 lead with a McMahon two-point conversion.

Rocky River, however, scored 90 seconds later to take the lead for good. Its two-point attempt failed to make it 20-15. The Middies last drive ended with a Pirate interception, allowing the home team to run out the clock and escape with the narrow victory.

McMahon finished with 35 carries for 219 yards. His 8-point performance helped him finish with 146 points scored, which ranks second on the Middies' single-season list. McMahon also finished with 1,340 yards, the fourth best in program history.

Junior Brennen Newton had two interceptions, junior Sawyer McMillin added three sacks and senior Brayden Homoki collected 20 total stops in his final career game and capped his senior season with 186 total stops.
