Midview Football comes up short against Avon Lake 24-17
Midview Varsity Football jumped out to a 17-3 first half lead only for host Avon Lake High School to rally for a 24-17 victory Friday (September 20) evening.
The Shoremen matriculated down the field on their opening drive but the Middie defense forced them to settle for a 35-yard field goal. The deficit was short-lived, however, as junior Michael Passerrello Jr. caught the ensuing kickoff and raced untouched for the 89-yard score. Senior Ethan Morris' extra point game Midview a 7-3 lead with 4:36 to play in the opening quarter.
Senior Dior Jones scored on a 3-yard touchdown run from the wildcat formation and Morris added another extra point to extend Midview's lead to 14-3 with 6:20 remaining in the half.
Junior Zachary Wallace had an interception on Avon's Lake's next possession to setup a 25-yard Morris field goal and the Middies took a 17-3 lead into the locker room.
The Shoremen scored touchdowns on back-to-back possessions to begin the second half to tie the game at 17. The second score was triggered by a sucessful onside kick. The score remained tied until a Midview's screen pass attempt on the first play of its two-minute drive deep in its own territory setup Avon Lake's game-winning touchdown, a six-yard run with just 1:48 left. The Middies drove deep into to Shoremen territory but a fourth down pass fell incomplete and the home team held on 24-17.
Junior quarterback Shay Williams completed 10-of-27 passes and threw for 130 yards and 1 TD. He also ran 7 times for 38 yards. Junior Brayden Homoki led the defensive effort once again with 17 total stops, including 9 solo hits.
The Middies (3-2, 0-2 SWC) turn their focus to Berea-Midpark High School as the Titans come to Ross Field at Adelsberg Stadium for a Homecoming match-up Friday (September 27) at 7 p.m.
