Midview Baseball drops non-league game at St. Edward
Midview Varsity Baseball suffered its third straight loss with an 8-3 non-conference defeat at the hands of host St. Edward High School Thursday (May 14) evening on the campus of John Carroll University.
Five different Middies collected a base hit, including back-to-back doubles by senior Kaiden Vogelpohl and junior Benjamin Szczepanski in the third. Vogelpohl also broke the single-season stolen base record, previously held by Andy Blazek in 2000, when he followed up the double with his 32nd stolen bases of the year. He then scored Midview's first run on Szczepanski's hit to make it 2-1.
The Eagles extended their lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the third. Junior Seth Randall (groundout) and senior Bryce Schubert (single) both drove in a run in the fourth to make it 6-3. St. Edward added a run in the fifth and sixth to complete the scoring.
Freshmen Kellen DeSimone (0-4) took the loss after allowing seven runs on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts over three innings. Senior Daniel Melendez worked the final three frame and scattered one run on one hit while fanning two.
The Middies (10-14) will play host to Lutheran West High School on Friday (May 15) at 7 p.m.
