Midview Baseball splits doubleheader with Olmsted Falls

Midview Varsity Baseball welcomed Olmsted Falls High School to the new MHS turf for a Senior Night Southwestern Conference doubleheader on Monday (May 4). The Bulldogs won game one 8-4, while the Middies salvaged the split with a 12-2 victory in game two.

In game one, Olmsted Falls jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in its first at-bat, only for Midview to respond with three runs of its own. Senior Brayden Widenmeyer drew a bases loaded walk, and junior Jake Derringer plated two runs when he reached on an error. The Middies reloaded the based before the teams had to endure a 30-minute lightning delay. After the break, the Bulldogs got out of the jam without any more damage done.

Midview took its first lead in the bottom of the second when senior Kaiden Vogelpohl led off with a triple and scored on a junior Benjamin Szczepanski groundout. Olmsted Falls tied the game at 4 on a wild pitch in the third. The Bulldogs regained a one-run advantage in the fourth and then added on with a three-run fifth before capping their scoring with another run in the sixth.

Senior Daniel Melendez finished with two of his team's seven hits. Senior Damien Presser (2-2) took the loss after giving up five runs on six hits with six walks and seven strikeots over four innings. Senior Bryce Schubert pitched the final three innings and allowed three runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

The teams were originally slated to play game two at Olmsted Falls on Tuesday (May 5), but changed plans due to the forecast for the rest of the week.

Szczepanski (3-0) shutdown the Bulldog offense in game two, limiting them to two runs on two hits with four walks and two strikeouts over six innings, to earn the win. Widenmeyer struck out two in a scoreless seventh frame.

Midview took a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by freshman Kellen DeSimone in the top of the fourth. Olmsted Falls then got on the board with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth. The Middies broke open the game with a three-run fifth. DeSimone added a sacrifice fly, while two more runs scored on a mishandled ball off the bat of junior Seth Randall. Junior Jake Ellis and DeSimone added RBI singles and a third run scored on an error in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 8-1. The Bulldogs scored their second run of the game in the sixth, before the Middies capped their scoring with a four-run seventh. Derringer had a big two-run single, and Randall added a RBI hit in the frame.

The Middies (9-10, 5-6 SWC) will return to action on Wednesday (May 6) when they celebrate the Grand Opening of their new facility in a pregame ceremony at 4:45 p.m. Midview will then resume a suspended game against Avon Lake High School at 5 p.m. The Middies, who will be the visiting team, led 1-0 in the bottom of the first before rains put the game on hold on April 2.
