Midview Volleyball defeats Westlake 3-2 in season opener
Midview Varsity Volleyball accomplished something during its match against host Westlake High School on Saturday (Augusy 16) morning that it had not done in six years—win its season opener. The 2025 Middies start the year 1-0 for the first time since 2020 following a thrilling, five-set 3-2 (25-15, 25-16, 21-25, 20-25, 17-15) victory over the Demons. It is also the first time Midview defeated Westlake in varsity volleyball since October 1, 2015.
The Middies used their momentum from a productive preseason to take a two-set advantage in the match. Westlake showed its resiliency by fighting back to tie the match at 2-2. Midview, however, kept its composure and withstood a tense fifth set to pull off the upset victory. Junior Lila Booth sealed the win with a kill after a few stellar defensive efforts kept the point alive during a rally.
Junior Emily Martin led the Middies with 13 kills, while junior Kennedy Heuser added 10 more. Freshman Delaney Pebworth dished out 29 assists in her high school debut. Junior libero Kendyl Gregor collected 21 digs, while four of her teammates each had 8 digs. Martin and Heuser both collected seven block assists. Gregor also added six service aces in the win.
The Middies return to action Tuesday (August 19) when they open Southwestern Conference play at home against Avon Lake High School. The tripleheader will begin at 4:30 p.m.
