Yates Advances to Sectional Semifinal and Qualifies for District Tournament
Midview Varsity Girls Tennis opened OHSAA Division II Sectional Tournament play Tuesday (October 1) and Wednesday (October 2) with competition at Medina High School. Tuesday's action was hampered by rain, which resulted in limited matches being completed on day 1. The sun came out Wednesday, enabling the tournament to catch back-up through the quarterfinals.
Senior Katarina Yates began her march through the State Tournament singles bracket with a trio of wins on Wednesday. The second-seeded Yates, who earned a bye in Round 1, won by default over Fairview in Round 2, topped Gilmour Academy's Gianna Francisco 6-1, 6-0 in Round 3 and then defeated Padua Franciscan's Nina Srbinoski 6-0, 6-0 in the Quarterfinal. Yates, now 27-0, advances to the Sectional Semifinal against third-seeded Elizabeth Chen (Hathaway Brown). That match will take place Saturday (October 5) at Strongsville High School at 9 a.m. Yates, who becomes Midview's first District Qualifier, will either play for the Sectional Championship or Third Place following the match with Chen later on Saturday.
Junior Jillian Hubbard opened her Sectional Tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Independence's Joanna Alrabady in Round 1 on Tuesday. She then fell to Chen in straight sets on Wednesday.
Junior Brynn Wuensch had a bye in Round 1 on Tuesday and defeated Fairview's Maxie Bruening 6-4, 6-0 in Round 2. Wuensch then fell to third-seeded Julia Mavis (Bay) 6-0, 6-0 in Round 3.
On the doubles side junior Morgan Piskunoff and sophomore Hailey Doyle-O'Dea won their opening match on Tuesday against Fairview 6-0, 6-2 then fell to Hathaway Brown in Round 2. Sophomore Danica Hazzard and Leah Vasarab also won their opening match over Independence 6-4, 7-5 on Tuesday only to fall to Cloverleaf 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday.
