Geyer and Wirth punch at-large tickets to OHSAA Track and Field Championship with Regional performances
Midview Varsity Track and Field had two of its student-athletes put their season on the line at the OHSAA Division II Regional Championship Wednesday (May 27) and Friday (May 29) on the campus of North Royalton High School, and thanks to the reformated postseason, senior Isabel Geyer and junior Jeffrey Wirth both advanced to the OHSAA Championship.
Historically, the 18 state qualifiers came from the four OHSAA regionals plus two more at-large spots. However, with the addition of two more divisions the qualifying marks expanded to five per region along with three at-large performances across the state. Those changes definitely helped the Middies send two student-athletes to the state finals for the first time since three represented the Middies in 2023.
Geyer entered the regional ranked fifth in the Shot Put. Her best throw on Wednesday was her first, a 37-08.50 mark, which enabled her to advance to the finals and ultimately place sixth. Once the regional results were compiled, Geyer earned the first at-large berth and will head to the championship as the 12th seed. On Friday, Geyer attempted to make it two for two in the Discus Throw but had to settle for eighth place with a top toss of 108-11.
Wirth was the fourth-best qualifier to the regional meet based on his performance at the OHSAA Division II Amherst Steele District in the Discus Throw. His top mark on Wednesday was his last throw of the final (162-08), which placed him eighth at the regional. Fortunately, all three at-large qualifiers came from North Royalton. That enabled Wirth to earn the third and final spot, which will seed him 11th at next week's championship. Like Geyer, Wirth had a chance to qualify for a second field event but missed out and placed 11th in the Shot Put with a throw of 46-07.00.
Geyer and Wirth will make their first ever trip to the OHSAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championship when the state's best gather at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of the Ohio State University June 6-7.
