Elyria Catholic edges Midview Softball 6-3 in postseason tune-up
Midview Varsity Softball returned to the diamond after a six-day layoff and dropped a postseason tune-up to visiting Elyria Catholic High School 6-3 on Tuesday (May 12) evening.
The Panthers put together a three-run, four-hit first inning to take control early. The Middies got on the board with a solo home run by sophomore Jillian Vandersluis in the second. Elyria Catholic extended its advantage to 5-1 with two runs in the fourth and added another run in the fifth. Senior Nina Ballachino drove home junior Savannah Holcomb with a single in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-2 and that is where it ended.
Offensively, Midview finished with six hits. Junior Dezirae Thomas collected two singles to lead the charge.
Holcomb (13-5) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts over the first three innings. Vandersluis then gave up three runs on five hits with two strikeouts across the final four frames.
The Middies (17-7) return to the MHS turf on Thursday (May 14) when they host Barberton High School in an OHSAA Division III Sectional Final at 5 p.m. Thursday's game is a ticketed event.
