Midview Softball edges Avon 2-1

Midview Varsity Softball overcame a late-innning deficit to win a key 2-1 Southwestern Conference game against visiting Avon High School Monday (April 27) evening.

The victory, combined with the other results of the day, moved the Middies into a three-way tie atop the conference. Midview and Berea-Midpark High School are both 8-3, while Amherst Steele High School is 6-3 in league action. The Middies still play Elyria High School and Olmsted Falls High School this week before ending their SWC slate at Amherst on May 4.

Avon broke a scoreless tie with a two-out RBI double in the top of the fourth. It was the Eagle's first hit of the day. Their only other hits came in the sixth when they had back-to-back one out singles. Junior Savannah Holcomb, however, worked out of the jam to keep her squad within striking distance. It paid off in the bottom of the frame. Holcomb drew a leadoff walk and raced around to score from first base on a double by senior Nina Ballachino. Senior Olivia Keenan then sacrificed Ballachino to third, before sophomore Jillian Vandersluis drove her in with a sacrifice fly to give the Middies a 2-1 lead.

Ballachino finished with two of Midview's four hits in the win. Holcomb (9-3) scattered one run on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

The Middies (13-5, 8-3 SWC) play host to Keystone High School on Tuesday (April 28) at 5 p.m.
