Midview Softball routs Wellington

Midview Varsity Girls Softball took a break from its rugged Southwestern Conference slate to host Wellington High School in a non-league game Saturday (April 11) at Victory Park. The Middies took care of business with a 24-0, five-inning victory to improve its record to 5-3 on the season.

Midview compiled 24 hits and put up a crooked number on the scoreboard during all four of its times to the plate. Coach Cassie Haight's squad scored four runs in the first and third innings and eight runs in the second and fourth frames.

Sophomore pitcher Jillian Vandersluis led the offense by going 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI. Junior shorstop Dezirae Thomas also had four hits, including two doubles, in five at-bats. So did sophomore outfielder Arrianna Presser, who went 4-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Senior second baseman Nina Ballachino went 2-for-3 with a grand slam, while freshman catcher Hailey Dye added three hits and four RBI and sophomore second baseman Brooke Cleary contributed two hits in the win.

Vandersluis (1-2) earned her first win of the year on the mound after scattering just one hit and three walks while striking out nine over five innings.

The Middies are back in action Monday (April 13) when the play host to rival Elyria High School at 4:45 p.m. Barring any unforseen circumstances, the game is slated to be the first game played on their newly-renovated fully turf field. The location remains behind MHS.
