Midview Boys and Girls Basketball Kick Off Season with DiFranco Classic on Saturday
The 2023 DiFranco Memorial Basketball Classic is scheduled to return to Midview High School's Troy DiFranco Court inside Kubuski Gymnasium on Saturday (December 2) afternoon. The 23rd edition of the event will feature five varsity basketball match-ups.
Amherst Steele and Orange will tip-off the day at 1 PM. North Ridgeville is slated to play Lorain at 2:30 PM. Elyria and Sandusky battle at 4 PM. Midview's boys will play host to Keystone at 5:30 PM. Midview's girls will conclude the night against Elyria Catholic at 7 PM.
There will be two special events on Saturday. First, the 2022-23 Midview Girls Basketball Final Four Banner will be unveiled during halftime of the Midview boys game at 5:30 PM. Then, we will have the Troy DiFranco Court dedication and donor recognition at halftime of the Midview girls game at 7 PM.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students (K-12). Senior Citizens (60+) will be admitted free. One admission will allow you to watch all five games. They can be purchased online via https://midview.hometownticketing.com/embed/all or at the gate via cash, credit card, Apple Pay, etc. In addition, no Midview passes or league passes are accepted at this event.
WEOL-AM 930 will broadcast all five games on the radio and online at http://weol.northcoastnow.com/
The event began with the idea of hosting a tournament and starting a scholarship fund worthy of bearing Bob DiFranco's name. What has emerged is an event that brings together the entire Lorain County community and has raised over $84,000 since 2000 for deserving students.
All proceeds from program advertisements, program sales and 50-50 raffles go directly into the DiFranco Sportsmanship Scholarship fund. Midview senior student-athletes who earned a varsity sportsmanship award during their careers are eligible for the annual post-graduate scholarship.
The real beneficiaries of this tournament are both the student-athletes who participate in the tournament and the scholarship recipients who are able to offset a portion of their college education as a result of the tournament. Hopefully, these young men and women will remember the tournament with kindness and respect and will continually associate these values with the name of Bob and Troy DiFranco.
