Bio
The embodiment of a “student athlete” seems inadequate to describe Dan Urig during his years at Midview High School. His activities included, Thespians, Band and, FFA, and Key Club. He even found enough time to earn National Honor Society membership. Dan only knew that nothing less than total effort would be acceptable in everything that he did, which was epitomized by his prowess as a football player. Midview’s second Lombardi Award winner and the first for offense, his coach Jim Bollenbacher best described Dan’s athletic side at the football banquet when he received the award. “This kid is a great representative of it, pound for pound, he’s known for defense but he’s a heckuva offensive guard. A great trapper. He gives his body up. He’s a strong kid. It’s unbelievable some of the hits he puts on people. He packs a wallop for a little kid”. At 5’10” and 155 lbs., that description was not exaggerated.
Dan played both JV and Varsity his sophomore year as a center on offense and linebacker on defense. In his junior year, he had eight primary tackles, and assisted on five others in a hard fought 2-0 win over Elyria West, which was typical of his play throughout the year.
Dan was a starting linebacker for three years and a starting guard for two, he also was honored as a Most Valuable Lineman and the team’s top defensive back, his senior year. Leading the team with 135 tackles, 13 of which were for losses, caused by fumbles. He received All Lakeland Conference, All Lorain County and All Northeastern District and received special mention All-State honors, his senior year. Dan Urig was truly a "student athlete".
