Bio

Michael Crum was a three year letterman for the Middies as a tight end, linebacker and defensive end. Hard nosed, with a take no prisoners mentality, Mike Crum would be on the short list of the best defensive players to ever suit up for the Middies. His coach, Bill Albright was quoted as saying, “He’s the kind of kid you can tell to run through a brick wall and he’d do it. He has that little mean streak that all good linebackers have”.

As a sophomore, Mike played behind senior Kirk Burgess, the standard for Midview defensive ends. He was ready for full time duty his junior year, in which he had seven quarterback sacks and also performed well at his tight end position on the offensive side of the ball. He attended the University of Michigan football camp between his junior and senior year and was picked as one of the top 10 of 140 outside linebackers in camp.

Mike’s senior year was as expected, outstanding. He caught five touchdown passes and was a devastating blocker from his tight end position. His dominance on defense included 9 quarterback sacks, 101 tackles with 49 primary hits, 59 assists and 1 interception. For the second straight year, he was All Lorain County. He was All-District and Northeast Ohio and received Special Mention - All State Honors and was the MVP on defense for his team. With all that recognition and a 3.0 grade average, it was not surprising that Mike would receive inquiries from many colleges and universities including Michigan and Penn State and scholarship offers from all the Mid-American schools. He accepted a full scholarship to Eastern Michigan University and was a member of the 1987 MAC and California Bowl Championship team. He transferred with a full scholarship to Youngstown State before his junior year and played guard on the 1991 Div I AA National Championship team. Education was always important to Mike. He received his undergraduate degree from Youngstown State. He later earned a Masters Degree from Tiffin University.

Mike Crum is a lieutenant with the Lorain County Deputy Sheriff’s department and lives in Eaton Township with his wife Ann and son Nick and daughter Alaina.
