Harry Groman served just a one-year stint as coach of the Midview boys basketball team, but he helped make the 1959-60 basketball season a memorable one.

Possessing excellent balance, the Middies were led in both scoring and rebounding by a pair of 6’2” seniors, Bill Krosky and Wayne Burgess. Ron Crowell and Dave Sheets, a pair of seniors usually provided the back court fire power with Jim Taylor seeing plenty of action and Chuck Huene finding ample playing time. Allen Stacy was usually the fifth starter although Joe Rafter, Jerry Burgess, Don Knechtges and Dick Forbush contributed great support on and off the bench. Student manages were Dave Cole and John Vonya. The Middies closed out the regular season with a record of 15-1 losing only to South Amherst, by a 45 to 49 score before defeating a highly talented Huron squad, 51to 48. Next came the tournament trail. Lorain St. Mary’s was the first victim in sectional play by a 57 to 47 margin followed by a win over arch-rival Ridgeville 46 to 45. North Olmsted was toppled 55 to 49 in the championship game at Elyria High School.

The next obstacle for the Middies was a talented Lakewood team in the district tournament at Baldwin Wallace College. In a game that was won by the Rangers 69 to 53 the season came to an end, but only after this team left its mark in the athletic history of Midview High School.

The 59-60 Middies without a player over 6’2” tall may have been the best “small team” to ever represent the Middies on the basketball court but it also takes its place as one of the best ever.
